Why are my eyes dry with contact lenses?
We fit patients for contact lenses every day in our Edmonton and Sherwood Park offices. The biggest complaint that we hear from our patients is that the contact lenses causes them to have dry eyes. While daily contact lenses have become more and more popular over the years, we are still hearing of issues of dry eyes or ocular allergies with contact lenses. This makes sense since the contact lens wraps around the eyes, causing it to “breathe” less throughout the day, which can lead to dryness and irritation. The redness and itchiness also start to become an issue.
What can be done to help with dry eyes and contact lenses?
In recent years, there have been a number of contact lens brands that have come out, specifically designed to keep the eye moist and avoid dry eyes. Our favorite brand is Dailies Total 1 from Ciba Vision. These lenses are extremely breathable, with a water gradient technology that approaches 100% water on the outer surface, leaving your eyes moist throughout the day. They are designed with over 80% water content, nearly the same as the surface of your eye.
