Are Your Eyes Ready For Summer?

With warmer days on the horizon, you’re probably planning summer outings, perhaps even a  vacation. Before heading outdoors, make sure you have a pair of high-quality sunglasses to keep your eyes safe and happy all summer long.

Why Do Your Eyes Need Sun Protection?

UV protection isn’t just for your skin.

Overexposure to UV light can cause your eyes to become sunburned, a condition called “photokeratitis.” Symptoms of photokeratitis are eye pain, redness, blurred vision and temporary vision loss. Contact an eye care professional without delay if you experience any of these symptoms.

Beyond sunburned eyes, UV light exposure can also increase a person’s risk of developing cataracts, macular degeneration, eye cancer and eye growths.

Make sure to choose sunglasses that offer 100% UVA/B protection, preferably ones that shield the entire eye area.

For added protection, it’s recommended to also wear a wide-brimmed hat, especially around midday, when the sun’s rays are the most powerful.

People of all ages — including babies — require sun protection, so make sure you have a pair of UV-blocking shades for each member of your family.
